Why settings won’t fix Google Photos. The face grouping and clever search exist precisely because Google analyses every image you upload, so you cannot keep those features and turn the analysis off: the scanning is the feature. A permission setting can hide an album from other people, but it cannot hide it from the platform doing the sorting, because the readable copy on Google’s servers is what powers everything you like about the app. There is no “stop reading my photos” switch inside a product built around the provider being able to see them. Privacy means photos that are encrypted before they ever leave your phone, with any smart sorting done on your own device. A service like Ente takes that path: it encrypts each image locally, then runs search and grouping on your device, so the cloud copy stays scrambled.
What actually matters in photo storage. Begin with the encryption model, because everything else is secondary if the provider can read your library. Confirm photos are encrypted on your device before upload, ideally with an open-source client you can verify so the claim is auditable rather than a slogan. Then look for on-device search and face grouping, so the clever features never require the provider to scan your photos. Check that automatic camera-roll backup is reliable, since a backup you have to remember to run is a backup you will lose. Finally, demand a clean export, because the whole point of taking back your photos is to keep them portable. If you have the hardware, a self-hosted gallery like Immich gives the most control of all: the photos and the analysis both live on a machine you own, with no provider in the loop.
How to switch. Export with Google Takeout, bulk-upload to the new service, and verify the count and a few albums before deleting anything from Google. Move your most-used albums first so you feel the change immediately, then let the rest of the library copy over in the background. Keep an encrypted local backup of your originals as well, so your only copy is never sitting on a single cloud account, no matter how private that account is.
