CoMaps

comaps.app

CoMaps is a community-governed fork of Organic Maps, itself derived from Maps.Me. It provides offline-first maps and navigation built on OpenStreetMap data and removes the Kayak affiliate integration and Google Firebase/Fused Location dependencies that were present in its upstream. The project is not-for-profit and hosted on Codeberg.

Our take

CoMaps picks up where Organic Maps left off, with a governance model that makes the removal of affiliate tracking structural rather than a one-time decision. Offline-first navigation on OpenStreetMap data means no location data touches a third-party server during normal use. The trade-off common to all OSM-based apps applies here: map completeness depends on contributor density, and rural or less-mapped regions can have gaps that Google Maps would fill. For urban navigation and hiking or cycling routes in well-mapped areas, CoMaps is a strong privacy-respecting default that asks nothing of your location data.
