Mullvad DNS is a free public encrypted DNS resolver from Mullvad VPN, available over DoH and DoT with no account required. It offers six hostname variants ranging from a plain no-log resolver to options that block ads, trackers, malware, social media, or adult content. Mullvad announced that it is shutting the service down and funding the Quad9 Foundation instead, judging that a second privacy-first public resolver duplicated work Quad9 already does well. The resolver built into the Mullvad VPN app is a separate service and is not affected.

Our take
The resolver did its job well while it ran: the same no-logging commitment the VPN is built around, six filtering tiers, and nothing to sign up for. The decision to close it reads as the honest one, since paying an established specialist beats running a duplicate service on the side, and none of it is a reason to trust Mullvad less. If you pointed a device or a router at one of its DoH or DoT hostnames, move to Quad9, the resolver Mullvad now backs, or pick another from our encrypted DNS page. Leave the Mullvad VPN app alone: its own DNS is a different service and keeps working.
