The Invisible Internet Project (I2P) is an anonymous network layer that allows for censorship-resistant, peer-to-peer communication. Anonymous connections are achieved by end-to-end encrypting the user’s traffic, and sending it through a volunteer-run network of roughly 55,000 computers distributed around the world.

Our take

Built for a different job than Tor: a closed peer-to-peer network optimized for hidden services and torrenting inside it rather than anonymous access to the regular web. That focus is the catch, since reaching the normal internet through it is an afterthought and the learning curve is steep. Pick it if you want to host or use eepsites and tolerate the setup friction. Anyone who just wants anonymous browsing of ordinary sites is better served by Tor.
