HomeKit is Apple’s framework for controlling smart home accessories from the Home app on iPhone and Mac. Home data is end-to-end encrypted, and HomeKit Secure Video processes camera footage on a hub in your home before storing it in iCloud.

Our take
For a mainstream smart home platform the privacy posture is strong: your home data is end-to-end encrypted and camera analysis happens on a hub in your house rather than a company cloud, with no advertising reason for Apple to mine it. The limits are the usual Apple ones, a closed ecosystem that expects you to buy Apple hardware and accessories carrying the right badge, and no way to self-host. The easy pick for iPhone households that want better-than-Alexa privacy without running a server. For full control and any-vendor support, Home Assistant is the escape hatch.
